How Massimiliana built the fortune
Massimiliana Landini Aleotti's wealth comes from Menarini, one of the largest privately owned pharmaceutical companies in Europe. The business was founded in Naples in 1886 and later moved its headquarters to Florence. Its modern growth is owed to her husband, Alberto Sergio Aleotti, who joined the company in the 1960s, took control of it and over the following decades turned a mid sized Italian drug maker into an international group.
Aleotti expanded Menarini through licensing deals, in which it sold medicines developed by other companies in its markets, and through acquisitions. A key step came in 1992, shortly after German reunification, when Menarini bought Berlin-Chemie, a former East German pharmaceutical producer. Berlin-Chemie became the platform for a large business in Germany and across central and eastern Europe. Menarini later built operations in Asia and Latin America and today sells its products in well over one hundred countries.
When Alberto Aleotti died in 2014, ownership of the group passed to Massimiliana and their children, Lucia and Alberto Giovanni Aleotti. The family has kept the company private, with the children taking the most visible roles in its governance, and has continued to invest in research and acquisitions. The value of their holding reflects Menarini's steady sales of established medicines combined with newer specialist products.
Staying private has shaped the business. Without public shareholders, Menarini can take a long view on research spending and acquisitions and does not publish quarterly results. The family has repeatedly said it intends to keep the company independent, even as consolidation in the pharmaceutical industry has led many mid sized European drug makers to sell to larger rivals.
Companies and holdings
The family's main asset is the Menarini Group, headquartered in Florence. Its activities include:
- prescription medicines in cardiology, gastroenterology, pain and inflammation, respiratory and other areas
- over the counter and consumer health products
- oncology, strengthened by the acquisition of the US biotech company Stemline Therapeutics in 2020
- diagnostics, through Menarini Diagnostics and its specialist businesses
- Berlin-Chemie, the group's large German subsidiary
Menarini runs manufacturing plants in Italy, Germany, Spain and other countries, and maintains its own research centres. Lucia Aleotti and Alberto Giovanni Aleotti serve on the board as representatives of the shareholders, while day to day management is entrusted to professional executives. Massimiliana's role is that of a co-owner rather than an operating manager.
Because the shares are not traded, the value of the family's stake can only be estimated from Menarini's reported revenue and profits and from the prices paid for comparable companies. The group's turnover runs to several billion euros a year, and a large share of it comes from outside Italy.
Early life and career
Massimiliana Landini was born in August 1942 and married Alberto Aleotti, who was building his career in the pharmaceutical industry. Over the following decades the couple settled in Florence, where Menarini had become one of the city's most important employers. Unlike her husband, she did not take an executive role in the business, and little detail about her own education or early career has been made public.
Her place in the company changed after her husband's death, when the inheritance gave her and her children shared ownership of the entire group. Since then the family has worked to maintain continuity in a company that had been closely identified with its patriarch. Lucia, who had already been active in the business, became one of its leading voices, and Alberto Giovanni took on a prominent board role, while Massimiliana remained largely out of public view.
Philanthropy and public life
The family's best known philanthropic and scientific vehicle is the Fondazione Menarini, established in 1976. It organises international medical conferences and educational programmes for doctors and researchers and publishes scientific material, contributing to continuing medical education in Italy and abroad. Menarini is also known in Italy for its long running series of art publications, distributed to doctors, and for support of cultural initiatives in Florence.
Massimiliana herself avoids publicity and rarely appears in the media. Public statements about the group and its social commitments are made by her children or by company executives, and her personal giving is not documented in detail.
