How Charles built the fortune
Charles Butt inherited a regional grocery business and turned it into a retail institution in Texas. H-E-B began in 1905 as a small store run by his grandmother, Florence Butt, in Kerrville. His father, Howard E. Butt Sr., expanded it across South Texas and gave the company the initials that became its name. Charles became president in 1971 and led it as chief executive for decades, and he remains chairman. His wealth is rooted in his family's ownership of the company, which has never sold shares to the public. The family's long term control has allowed the company to reinvest profits rather than pay them out, and to keep a strong regional focus without pressure from public shareholders.
Under his leadership H-E-B grew into a chain of hundreds of stores across Texas and northern Mexico, with a reputation for low prices, strong private label products and close ties to local communities. The company invested heavily in manufacturing its own food, from bakeries and dairies to meat processing, which helped it control costs and quality. It also launched formats aimed at different customers, including Central Market, a gourmet concept introduced in Austin in 1994, as well as stores focused on Hispanic shoppers and discount buyers.
H-E-B is often cited for its disaster preparedness. The company runs its own emergency response operation, and during hurricanes, winter storms and the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic it kept stores supplied and open when other retailers struggled. That reputation has strengthened customer loyalty in its home market and helped it hold off national competitors. In 2015 Butt announced a plan giving long serving employees a share in the company's ownership.
Companies and holdings
H-E-B is one of the largest private companies in the United States and the dominant grocer in Texas. Day to day management passed to non family executives over time, with Craig Boyan becoming president and later chief executive, while Butt continued to chair the company.

Early life and career
Charles Butt grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas, where the family business had moved its headquarters, and worked in stores from a young age, stocking shelves and bagging groceries. He studied at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and later earned an MBA from Harvard Business School. Between his studies he served in the US Navy. His upbringing in the stores gave him direct experience of how groceries were bought, priced and sold, and he later put strong emphasis on store level operations.
He joined H-E-B in management and rose through operating roles before succeeding his father as president. In the 1980s he oversaw the move of the company headquarters to San Antonio, where it occupies a restored former army arsenal complex. His older brother, Howard Butt Jr., worked in the company but devoted much of his life to religious and leadership education programs, leaving Charles in charge of the business.
Philanthropy and public life
Butt is one of the leading private funders of public education in Texas. He founded Raise Your Hand Texas, an advocacy and research group that supports public schools and trains school leaders, and he created the Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers to help students preparing to teach in Texas classrooms. He also established the Holdsworth Center, which runs long term leadership programs for school districts. H-E-B's Excellence in Education Awards recognise teachers and principals across the state.
He has made gifts to universities and health causes and, through H-E-B, to food banks across Texas. He seldom gives interviews and is known as a private person, but his education work has made him an influential voice in state policy debates. Butt never married and has no children, and his long term plans for H-E-B have been watched closely in Texas.
